Our Story

When we aren't photographing we spend our time hanging with our two girls, having impromptu kitchen dance parties and hiking as many Maine and New Hampshire mountains as we can! Our daily adventures include surfing, swimming, hiking, watching Star Wars, quoting the best movies of all time, and blasting music from the 80's.

Dean and I were on a Costa Rican beach for about five minutes when we said in unison, “I could totally live here.”

It wasn’t our first adventure, or our first temptation to pack up and move. It was just the one that finally clicked.

We met through boring office jobs, where Brittany found greater fulfillment in shooting rubber bands and paper clips at Dean than she did from data entry work. Brittany was a recent graduate from graphic design school, with a focus in photography, and clearly taking what work she could get.

Dean was just trying to take a nap.

“Cut it out!” he said. “Temp jobs are for napping!”

Clearly we hadn’t yet found our callings. We did, though, find our way to an Aerosmith & KISS concert, where Brittany summoned the courage (and channeled Star Wars) to look at him across the mosh pit and yell above the noise, “I like you!”

“I know!” he said.

We were married five years later, on an island with a stunning view of Portland, Maine then immediately hopped on a plane for our honeymoon in Costa Rica.

It was pretty clear, with Costa Rica’s beautiful beaches and rainforests and Maine’s rugged coast and natural beauty around every corner, that photography would become a driving passion in our lives…

…and that we would always live near the water.

Going Pro

Every story has its beginnings. We don’t have any photos from our first date (iPhones weren’t even invented yet!!). It was a similar lack of photos, or specifically of photo quality, that launched our careers.

In 2007, close friends had hired a wedding photographer that was a poor fit for their needs. They were bummed about the quality and compositions of the work they received. So bummed, in fact, they hired me—Brittany—to reshoot their wedding. They restaged the whole thing just for her photos! It was an honor, and a strange professional adventure that worked out beautifully.

Encouraged by their glowing review, I acted on a quiet dream and launched Brittany Rae Photography.

Dean was my capable assistant, and VAL (voice activated light-stand), until I put a camera in his hand to help capture a particularly large wedding. His unique focus, timing, and approach, brought a wonderful complement to my lead photography. I hired him on the spot, which was convenient, as he’s my husband.

Together, we have become Two Adventurous Souls.

Our work includes weddings and special events, family portraits, and commissioned imagination portraits. While we focus on wedding photography, developing our skills across a broad range helps us tell stories in fresh and fitting ways.

Now on clear nights, after our children are in bed, Dean heads to the mountains or the beach for astrophotography. His images are featured in several galleries, have been shortlisted for numerous awards, and are featured on his companion site

Beyond commissioned photography, we have received awards from the Maine Professional Photographers Association and Professional Photographers of America for our images, and have had work featured in countless local and national wedding magazines/blogs.

…though we’re still waiting to hear back from National Geographic. Who doesn’t dream of filming polar bears under water? Or is that just us?

+ What kind of gear do you use and are you insured?

We get this one a lot! We are both Nikon shooters and typically work with two cameras each at a time. Insurance – yes! All of it. Gear insurance, Liability Insurance, etc. If your venue needs that information, let us know! We will have our agents get that to them right away.

+ Do you backup files?

Yes! Our cameras all record to two memory cards at a time. When we get home from your wedding the cards get split up into two different locations and the images backed up on our computer, external drive, external drive in a waterproof/fireproof safe, external drive off-site. And when we finish editing your images – those finished files go online as well. Backing up files is kind of an obsession of ours.

+ How much does photography cost?

That’s a good question. If you’re looking around online you’re probably seeing a wide range of prices. We’ve priced ourselves based on experience, years in the business, quality and services we provide. For family sessions we start at $250 with families typically spending around $700. For weddings our elopements start at $1750 while our full weddings start at $3600 with the average investment around $4600.

+ Do you charge travel?

There are no travel fees for our weddings in New England and Costa Rica exceptions might be for multiple day events or on the islands where coverage ends after the last boat for the mainland leaves. For weddings outside of those areas – lets chat! We have family and friends all over the country so travel costs might not be what you think they’d be.

+ I’d like to customize a wedding package, can I do that?

Certainly! Lets talk.

+ What if you get injured or can’t make our date?

Another question we get a lot! Brittany has photographed weddings while having morning sickness every three hours, to nursing, to photographing with a sprained ankle – all without missing a beat! If an emergency/injury comes up we will try our absolute best to make your day. We have a network of photographers with a similar style to us we can count on to step in for one or both of us in the unlikely event that one or both of us can’t make it. We would still handle all the post-production editing to ensure the images reflect the style you booked!

+ Do you have any vendor recommendations?

Absolutely! After you book your wedding with us, we send along a list of recommended vendors. With our connections to weddings across the country we can connect you with awesome vendors in any area!

+ Want to get beer and tacos?
