Rebecca's Bat Mitzvah | New Hampshire Bat Mitzvah
It was a mild and sunny Saturday morning for Rebecca's New Hampshire Bat Mitzvah. Family and friends gathered outside of the Etz Hayim Synagogue waiting for Rebecca's big day. This was the first time I was allowed into the Synagogue to photograph so I was fortunate enough to get to experience the full Bat Mitzvah for the first time! It was quite an exciting yet nervous experience for me! Not understanding a word of Hebrew myself, I was on my toes the entire service making sure I didn't miss a moment!
During the Aliyah to the Torah, Rebecca read about the ordeals for Jewish women throughout history. The Rabbi made it clear that, while these ordeals sounded harsh, they were in fact much better than what was going on in neighboring cultures at the time. This was a poignant moment as Rebecca referenced women rights and made many very educated statements on how women are not treated equally throughout the globe. She referenced Malala and having learned about her become a figurehead for women's right to education in the Middle East. To say I was impressed with Rebecca is an understatement. Her parents, Lisa and Joel, have instilled such amazing values in their daughter at such a young age! I can't wait to see where the future takes her!
My favorite moment came at the end, when all the guests were invited to shower Rebecca with "sweet wishes" or rather lob tootsie rolls at her. I can only imagine how fun it is for a 13 year old to be told they can throw food during a religious service! It was a sweet gesture and a really fun way to end!
After the service we headed to Tuscan Kitchen in Salem, NH for the reception. I absolutely love how high energy Bat/Bar Mitzvah's are. All of Rebecca's friends were out on the dance floor for games and dancing from the very moment the doors opened until it was time to leave. Even her little brother, not one ounce of shyness, was out on the stage, mic in hand, singing at the top of his lungs surrounded by all Rebecca's friends!
