Spring Garden Party Themed Wedding at The Nonantum in Kennebunkport, ME

Along with photographing real weddings we love to get together with our wedding vendor colleagues and get creative. This Styled Shoot or “Editorial” Wedding was just that, and I think what we all needed going into the start of the wedding season.

I attended a Christmas party at the Victoria Mansion this past winter and in one of the rooms was a mannequin wearing a skirt made of pine boughs. I snapped a picture and sent it to my friend Rue, a very talented florist and owner of Geraniums Red, Delphiniums Blue and told her we should create something like it with flowers for a real live model to wear. She was instantly all in on the idea.

As my ideas tend to do, this one spiraled into something much larger than we originally planned. After chatting with Rue about the dress and myself realizing how much she was investing of her time and purchasing florals to make the gown, I wanted to make sure I produced an amazing set. All with the goal of hopefully making the session go viral and get some publications interested in the images. While you can do that with a single image, publications like to see a complete and cohesive design.

I’m not a wedding planner or designer, but I put on my best creative hat and tapped into some amazing vendors to contribute to the project while encouraging everyone to be as creative as possible. Like, what would your partner wear to your wedding if you were rocking a gown entirely made of flowers? A wedding jumpsuit obviously! And a bouquet of flowers? No way. Let’s do wearable art and create an earpiece made of flowers too. You’ve got to have amazing accessories. And the cake? Oh that has to be able to stand out as well and Lisa’s creation (Cakes for All Seasons) did just that! With amazing tendrils of rhubarb and gorgeous florals she sourced from the farmers market that cake looked as amazing as it tasted! Lisa always makes a real cake for our models to cut - and for all of us to eat. Because after a full day of being creative, sugar is needed!

Realistically a gown made of florals isn’t going to last your entire wedding day so what would you change into? That’s where Wedding Angels Boutique came in and above and beyond! They swooped in with a rack of gowns for our models to wear. The black gowns paired so well with the white pantsuit (provided by Grayce Bridal) along with another stunning floral inspired wedding gown from Wedding Angels.

The Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport provided a stunning backdrop as well as a gorgeous inside Garden space to showcase what a smaller, micro-wedding, might look like in their space. While they have a completely redesigned bridal suite just down the hall, for this shoot, we set up Samantha Howard right in the room with us so she could work her beauty magic on our models. Since she was right in the room we could all learn a few tips and tricks while she was glamming up the ladies!

This was such an amazing day! My daughter even attended and helped out with everything. The drive home we were both so exhausted but so creatively fulfilled! I can’t begin to express my gratitude enough to everyone who participated.
