Loon Lodge Wedding | Bess and Brendan | Maine Wedding Photographers
It was a perfect Day for a Loon Lodge Wedding!
How Did Brendan Propose?
If you take a close look at the tables, Bess and Brendan wrote up a little bit about their engagement at each one for their guests to read during the dinner hour. "May 21st, 2016. I had just finished a busy week codirecting the school play. Exhausted from the demands of school, Brendan could read it on my face and suggested that we take off and go camping for the weekend.
We packed our canoe to the absolute top and set out at sunset to find our camp. As night set, we were still canoeing and still hadn’t found the site. Little did we know, we were within 100 feet before we gave up. The next day we set out to paddling again and finally found the place Brendan had reserved… a private island- site #3.
We spent the day fishing, laughing and enjoying the fire. After a fantastic dinner we began talking about us. Brendan said, “We’re really happy aren’t we? Did you know buying the house with you was the second easiest decision I ever had to make? The first is asking you to marry me.” The rest… well here we are. "
Bess and Brendan bring family traditions to their Loon Lodge Wedding
There’s a Native American tradition to avoid rain on a special occasion. So naturally when the weather for Bess and Brendan’s rehearsal dinner was pouring rain with more rain forecasted the next day drastic steps needed to be taken to ensure a rain-free day. Brendan briefly explained the tradition of burying a bottle of bourbon the night before the wedding. Armed with plastic spoons Brendan and a few of his groomsmen took to the beach in front of Loon Lodge and buried a bottle of bourbon. Well it worked! With the exception of a few short sun showers after their outdoor ceremony, the day was beautiful and sunny!
Speaking of sunny, let me just tell you about Eleanor! Eleanor is Brendan’s grandmother and she is a sunny little spitfire! If it’s not enough indication of her personality, I learned she works as a blackjack dealer in Vegas!! Eleanor is the grandma everyone wishes they had.
But then again, the entire Milligan and Johnson clans were so amazing! Both families shared in the day and different traditions honoring their respective backgrounds. During the ceremony the couple asked their guests to partake in an Irish tradition of blessing a rock and throwing it in the water after the ceremony. And in respect for Brendan’s jewish roots, Eleanor presented the couple with a glass for the traditional glass smashing!
The day was filled with so many personal touches from family and friends!
